Many (philanthropic) foundations, civil society organisations (CSOs) and small and medium companies (SMEs) are committed to support the transition to a zero emissions society. Their strategies should cover not only tracking emissions and implementing reduction measures but also making climate contributions to address ongoing emissions. The Coalition for Climate Responsibility project provides guidance to ensure broader uptake and multiplication of the climate responsibility approach.
Supported by the Allianz Foundation, the Coalition for Climate Responsibility is establishing a replicable and implementable model of the climate responsibility approach including climate contributions as an alternative to offsetting and carbon credits.
Under the climate contribution approach, organisations prioritise reducing their climate footprint and apply a fee to ongoing emissions to acknowledge and address their impact. The resulting budget is used to fund meaningful climate action—without claiming climate neutrality and allowing for support of a broad range of activities.
